In a report from Newzoo.com about DLC, pre-owned and digital distribution CEO Peter Warman dropped a major bomb shell hinting that titles such as GTA V might be available to download only!!
“There are a lot of reasons why publishers are pushing towards digital distribution of triple-A games.”
“Speaking out loud might harm the relationship with retail partners, but the benefits have become too large to remain silent about the desire to go completely digital. The ultimate objective being to launch games faster, create continuous revenues on a title and simply to make more money.
“Will retail disappear from the picture? Of course not.” he continued. “Retail will always remain an important channel to promote and distribute games. Retail has a strong hand to play when it comes to eyeballs and… boxes make a nice gift.”
“Boxed games will not disappear, but what is in the box will. That is why the boxed GTA V version will contain a collectible piece of merchandise and a download code. No disc.”
NO DISC!! Quit you jibber jabber you crazy fool. Obviously making money and screwing people that actually buy the game and wait in line for midnight launches for the latest release of their favourite game is all this is about. With little or no regards to simple things like hard disc failures or space, download times from their servers on “launch” day and people who don’t have broadband!!
I don’t honestly think this is something they can or will try to bring in anytime soon, but this is a dangerous road they’re trying to point us down… the full report can be read here or downloaded in pdf format here.
In other GTA news, it has been discovered that Ray Liotta is not the voice on the GTA V trailer, awww. But that doesn’t mean that the character Tommy Vercetti isn’t in the game… just that someone else (who sounds like Ray) is doing the chit-chat. Also Sam Houser, one of the gods of rockstar has confirmed that GTA V is to be set in ‘Los Santos’ (LA) and surrounding area. That doesn’t mean all of California. Despite that GTA V is apparently to be the largest GTA game yet, and if they include GTA: San Andreas in that comparison, then we are in for a real treat. No other solid details yet but we will be sure to let you know when there is!
